1st hindu temple built n inaugurated in 1867 was built at GOKOOLA by an indentured labourers who worked as sirdar at beau se jour sugar estate. He came to Mauritius in 1846. Out of his salary Mr GOKOOLA bought a piece of land and with the help of others indentured labourers built the first hindu temple of Mauritius which was inaugurated in 1867.In a book written by unnuth Beejadhur LES Indiens A Maurice it is clearly stated that the temple is the first hindu temple in Mauritius. Today the temple is ruled by a managing committee GOKOOLA Temple STY. President Mr Rohit jibna, v president Bhimsingh Sewak, secretary Mr Issendranath prabhoo Jheelan, treasurer Mr Doorga Prakash.
