BRIEF HISTORY OF

 THE ASSOCIATION/SHIV MANDIR

64 years ago, in February 1956, a group of 31 prominent and devoted persons of the Clairfonds Village joined hands together to create  THE VACOAS CLAIRFONDS HINDU PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION. With the support and collaboration of the Hindu Community throughout the Island, they were able to buy a plot of land (20 pchs) and to construct a building of about 2000 sq ft of concrete block walls with corrugated iron sheets roof. We must say that we are very proud of the UNITY and VISION of our Elders – who inspite of their miseries, desperate situation and hard days, they strived in keeping the community UNITED. Moreover, they have succeeded in their endeavour to leave such a great heritage (legacy) for this generation of ours. Today, by the Grace of the Almighty Lord Shivji, their children and grand children (i.e our generation, are living a happy and prosperous life in this peaceful country.

During the first 40 years, the Association managed to remain true to its original socio-cultural vocation. It helped to supplement the formal school education by a varied range of extra mural and character building activities like : Drama, sports and games, debates, all religious activities and other literary pursuits, fancy fairs, classes for children and adults etc. It helped in the moulding of our youth. Many of our members are presently occupying key positions and contributing to the progress of our beloved country.

Shiv Mandir – A Dream Comes True

Ever since 1991, the Association decided to implement a long cherished project i.e the construction of a temple (Shiv Mandir) a storey building of about 2000 sq ft , on the premises of the Association at Clairfonds Rd No.1., Vacoas, in order to meet the urgent need of the inhabitants of Clairfonds, Jackson Rd, Closel,, Phoenix, John Kennedy, St  Paul , Modern, Solferino, Carreau Laliane, Bonne Terre, Paillotte etc  The same construction works (1^st Phase) were completed by April 1999.

Affiliation with The Mauritius Sanatan Dharma Temples Federation

Our Shiv Mandir obtained “Full Affiliation” with the Mauritius Sanatan Dharma Temples Federation on  13^th October 1999.

The Association has also been duly registered as an approved “Charitable Institution” by the Ministry of Finance & Economic Development since 24^th December 2004.

Moreover, we are also registered with the Municipal Council of Vacoas Phoenix and also duly affiliated with the MACOSS.

Ever since the construction and inauguration (Murthis Sthapna) of our SHIV MANDIR in between 21^st and 25^th April 1999, the Association is regularly celebrating all the major religious ceremonies. Some 800 members, devotees and inhabitants of the nearby regions attend to our programmed activities.

Regular Activities Organised

With the passing of years, we started making progress with the celebration of all major religious ceremonies and festivals at our “A” Status,  Shiv Mandir e.g New Year (1^st January) Puja; Masik Shiv Abhisheks, Maha Shivratree (10 days Shiv Abhishek puja & Char Pahar Pooja), Holika Dahan & Holi Mela;  Shri Ram Katha & Ram Nawmi Pooja (8/9 days); Shri Hanuman Jayanti; MAsik Abhishek Puja on all Mondays during the Shrawan Mass; Ramayan Sapta Chantings & Tulsidas Jayanti; Shri Krishna Janmasthami Celebrations; Shri Ganesh Jayanti Puja,Ananth Vrat Puja;  Navratri Shree Durga Pooja; Shree Luxmi Pooja(Divali); Ramayan Chantings(weekly – Every Friday evening), Shri Satya Sai Baba Devotional/Kirtan Group(twice weekly- every Thursdays/Sundays). And Annually Shri Satya Narayan Katha .

We are also having weekly Sanskrit  & Gita Classes at the Mandir by Shri Kamlesh Dookayka.

At all these ceremonies, our Kirtan/Ramayan groups perform accordingly after making their proper programmes, training and repetitions etc. in order to satisfy our devotees with their melodious and appropriate kirtans/bhajans.

Our Ramayan Group have also been participating in the Ramayan Chanting Competition organized by the Mauritius Sanatan Dharma Temples Federation. Moreover, the Ramayan & the Kirtan Groups also perform, at requests, for religious ceremonies organized by our members at their residences etc.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP

As at 31^st December 2019, we had 822 Life Members on Roll.
